Roman Signer

Artist

Special guest: Volcanic Attitude is thrilled to welcome Roman Signer as a special guest for its 2025 edition.
For over five decades, the Swiss artist has created sculptural experiments inspired by the volcano. “I’d like to go back to Stromboli,” the artist said in a 2007 interview, “Strangely enough, Stromboli is the only volcano I really know… I think it has a classic form. Because it juts out of the sea, like a cone.”

Roman Signer (Switzerland, 1938) creates short time sculptures. He does so by testing the forces of fire, water and air. His playful experiments take place in open air and involve simple materials such as rubber boots, balloons, tables, suitcases, kayaks. Over the years, Signer went on multiple expeditions to Stromboli, starting in 1992, shooting a red silk ribbon across one of the volcano’s craters.

Projects for Volcanic Attitude

For the Volcanic Attitude Festival, the artist returns to create two new works, Action with Boots and Action with Pan, on Stromboli island and Vulcano island.
